Remember
the keywords/phrases that you think best describe your web site may not
be those that someone searching for your product or service may use.
You
must think like your customers. What are your customers searching for
when they use the Internet to find you? Which keywords/phrases do you
think someone might enter when looking for the product or service you
offer?
Would
it be more effective to use a keyword phrase of "books for children" or
"kid's books" or even "Dr. Seuss"? Think about how your target
audience thinks in order to develop a list of effective keywords.
Here
are some of the more basic rules for picking effective keywords and keyword
phrases.
Avoid common
words. Try to be specific. "Children's books" rather than "books".
Use phrases
of two or three words; for example "Dr. Seuss books".
Use your
keywords/phrases to create niches for your web site. Although, you want
to rank high for "children's books", think about all the other
sites out there that are also using that phrase. So, use more focused
words/phrases like "Dr. Seuss books" or "Winnie the Pooh
books".
This one
may sound strange, but consider misspelling words. Think about how the
word or words for your products and/or services are commonly misspelled.
Don't forget
about location! A search for "portland Maine book stores" will
yield better results than "book stores".
Avoid what
are sometimes referred to as "stop" words. Many search engines
skip commonly used words to save disk space. These would be words like
a, the, and, web, home page, etc.
A good way
to start brainstorming your keywords list is to ask friends and customers
what words they would use to find your site. Write them down. Then see
if you can come up with variations or two to three word phrases.
The next
step is to test your keyword choices.
